A Childs Right To Believe

As a kid I loved holidays, I love the different store decorations and stories that filled my heart with hope and joy. I was a dreamer. I dreamed of a better world where fairies and houses made of ginger bread were real. Those dreams helped me make it through the tough times because every fairy tale started off like a nightmare but always ended with ‘happily ever after’. As I got older I learned that life wasn’t a fairy tale but I was blessed to have those fairy tales to help me grow past the nightmares that was my reality.

I say all this because too often parents now take away a child’s moment of believing. We are so quick to “keep it real” with our kids that we don’t remember the enjoyment of dreams. How dare we as adults take away a child’s right to believe in anything? Having an imagination is what makes those of us who do make it great. I don’t care if it’s a fat white guy in a red suit, a bunny hopping around giving eggs or a fairy replacing fallen teeth with money, it’s a dream. It’s a dream that gives them imagination to run with. Some of the best stories come from a dream. So before you are so quick to take away a dream remember what the dream meant for you. Don’t ruin a child’s chance to make it; instead encourage them.
